Solid Timber Flooring

Acclimatisation

Timber is a natural material that responds to its environment. Before installation, we acclimatise the timber in the room where it will be laid for a minimum of 5–7 days (longer in some cases). This allows the moisture content of the boards to stabilise relative to the room humidity, reducing the risk of gapping, cupping, or buckling after installation.

Subfloor Preparation

Proper subfloor preparation is critical for timber flooring success. We ensure the subfloor is level to within 3 mm over 2 metres, clean, dry, and structurally sound. For concrete subfloors, we check moisture content using a hygrometer and apply a moisture barrier where required. For timber subfloors, we check for loose boards, protruding nails, and adequate ventilation underneath.

Installation Methods

Secret nailing: The standard method for solid timber over a timber subfloor. Boards are nailed through the tongue at an angle, so no nail heads are visible.

Glue-down: Used for engineered timber over concrete subfloors. A flexible timber flooring adhesive is trowelled onto the concrete and the boards are pressed into place.

Floating: Some engineered timber products feature a click-lock system for floating installation over underlay. This method is fast and does not require adhesive or nails.
